Hi PWJ members!

It's that time again to announce the PWJ Member Spotlight for December, and this month it goes to......

Maeva Liebling!

Maeva makes many contributions to the PWJ facebook group, regularly posting videos which have motivated and inspired many members.  She  gives encouraging feedback to other members and takes part regularly in the PWJ challenges.  So here is her member spotlight!

1. Where are you from?

  • I’m from Switzerland (French-speaking part) but I lived ten years in California between 2004 and 2014.

2. When did you start playing piano?

  • I played very simple duets with my grandfather when I was 4 or 5. I started taking lessons later, when I was 10. I took lessons for about 10 years, then played on and off for more than 20 years. I went back to practicing about 4 years ago.

3. What got you interested in learning music?

  • I was raised by my grand-parents until I was 6. They didn’t play professionally, but music was a huge part of their life. They transmitted me their passion. I didn’t have my own room (I was sleeping in the living-room) but there was a room with two baby grand pianos (and almost no space left), which was my favorite place!

4. What is your favorite style of piano music?

  • Hard one! But I think my favorite style of piano music is jazz from the 90’s to now - improvised music mixed with elements of electro, pop, rock, etc. Some names: Leo Tardin (solo or Grand Pianoramax), Bugge Wesseltoft, E.S.T, Gogo Penguin, the Bad Plus, …

5. Do you have any favorite pieces to play?

  • Not really - I don’t have a repertoire yet (I tend to forget everything I play within a few weeks). But there is one piece in classical music I often relearn, it’s Prokofiev’s “Montagues and Capulets” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GG9LMTXwCY)

6. What has most helped you most in improving as a pianist?

  • In no particular order: consistency in practice, listening to a lot of music (live when possible) and two outstanding teachers - Jonny is one of them 🙂

7. Do you have any tips for other PWJ members?

  • Be patient! The turtle wins the race (to be honest, I’m not very patient myself. But I think it’s a good tip anyway 🙂 ). And enjoy the journey!

8. What is your favorite part of the PWJ Membership?

  • I love all of it! The quality of the lessons and workshops is outstanding. The quick tips are great to try something new without spending months on it. The community is also a huge source of inspiration and support !

9. What are your future music goals?

  • Get better at improvisation, keep on learning new things, and get over performance anxiety.

10. Do you have any words you try to live by or a favorite quote?

  • “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever” / Gandhi

Congratulations @Maeva L! You deserve it to be featured!  I really enjoyed reading your responses. I didn't know that you played duets with your grandfather.  I love that advice you gave, and the quote by Gandi... that is one to post on my wall. I would add to Chris's comments that you deserve the spotlight because you are such a hard-working student, you post videos regularly, you have a great attitude, and you are very helpful and supportive to the other members.

Thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed reading your responses. I have the same problem as you about the tendency to forget almost everything 😀

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! Next year I'll try to devote some time maybe once or twice a week to play things I've already learned and maybe, maybe being able to build a tiny repertoire...
