Victor M
Hello everyone! I'm kind of new here and I just have a question, when I enroll to the PWJ course I was trying to do my assessment but I used to have "proper training" probably 5, 7 years ago I've learn scales , inversion, basic harmony I can follow some songs with the chords ( those chords in Internet, Az chords , ultimate guitar chords etc )but I've never practice triads so do you guys recommend to practice " ground 0" ? I would like to know your opinion! Thank you!!
Patrick H
@Victor M, There is so much to learn here. When I would practice, take a lesson or course I would pay attention to how quickly I could pick something up, and begin to play. I found that if a skill was lacking or just didn’t understand enough to comfortably continue then I would reassess my skill level and try to determine if a foundational basic was missing. I found that I had a mixture of stronger basic skills but intermediate skills as well as advanced skills were not as strong as I thought they were, so I settled on a level that allowed me to more quickly pick things up with a clearer understanding of the lesson content. I still buy sheet music and play easy, not so easy and stretch or more difficult music to push myself but without getting frustrated. Playing should be fun and enjoyable and not feel like a job. Going back is fine and if your foundation is strong you will find yourself going through the lessons quickly and spending more time on skills that need practice. It is all good in the end and is your personal journey to make of it whatever you want it to be. Pat
Sharon Kae D
I appreciated your response, Patrick. I am finding that I travel through some of the courses very, very slowly. I pick things up, then try to apply it to many of the songs I either compose or are in my fake books. I find the process amazing. I am not just trying to go through courses, I am trying to build, build, build on the foundation I have. Lately, I have been listening to Beegie Adair CD's, and I am so encouraged at what I learn from her by just listening, and "playing along" with her. Sometimes I go back to foundational courses I have completed and redo a lesson or two, and there always seems to be more for me to learn. It really is an exciting journey. Thank you for sharing.
Aimee K
Hi Victor, Better late than never! I just started using this forum. YES! Go back to the basics. If you already know the skill go ahead and skip it. Take from the lessons what you need to learn. You'll be happy you worked through these boring exercises! You gotta build a foundation before you build a house.😁🎹
