December challenge

I am still struggling to finish December challenge. So confused on week 4. What I see on line 85 for the D7 and G7 chords doesn't even line up to what Jonny says to play. He plays all the notes together but that isn't the way the sheet music reads. Help please!

@Cinda C I think I see what confused you. Jonny’s sheet music he is displaying on screen is not exactly what is notated on the downloadable sheet music for those measures you are questioning. His sheet music drops the rag roll in line 85 and he plays 6ths with the melody as the top note. I believe that is why he states to play those notes together.  In the downloadable version of the music the rag roll is present both in line 85 and at the end of the song. My opinion is that You could play it whatever way sounds better to you. Jonny will often state that jazz musicians take liberty when playing music. I have often simplified music when it presents difficulties or when I want some particular sound.

Thank you. I appreciate your input. I was going by the downloaded sheet music and I was having a very hard time following him.  Since I am a beginner, this was not making any sense. Not even sure I know what "the sixths are". Wish I wasnt feeling so overwhelmed with these online lessons.

Hi @Cinda CSorry for throwing that term out. It will all make sense the longer and more you play. It really will. Jonny is a great instructor as are his fellow instructors. One trick is to find the courses and exercises that are correct for your playing level otherwise it can get quite daunting. The idea is to enjoy the experience while you learn. I don’t know if you took the survey to identify your skill level. If you do it will help you navigate the options to match your level with options available. I have had multiple years of private lessons but did not play for a while so took a few of the available foundation courses which definitely helped get me going again.
Using the key of c you will have notes c d e f g a b within the scale and within one octave. They are all white notes on the keyboard. If you simply count the notes starting with c=1 then you find that the 6th note counting from left to right is the key lettered as a.  This is a sixth. A third would be c and e, a fifth would be c and g and so forth. Jonny has lessons on scale fundamentals that will explain all of this. The people in this forum are helpful with any question and they are quite skilled so do not be concerned about asking questions.
