When the piano becomes more than just a peice of furniture to you, something magical happens. You no longer let it sit there in your living room and collect dust. It turns into who you are, and therefore becomes a part of you. I never heard any piano player refer to the piano as just a conversational piece, but rather something they HAVE to include in their daily routine. They think about it constantly, preparing themselves for a heavy practice session- working on 2 or 3 songs at a time..... or simply put, refocusing their minds. It all starts up there, in your mind. If you crowd it with negative thoughts or things you have to do for the rest of the day- bills you have to pay, or chores you have to do in the yard, guess what? Forget about growing from yesterday when you had somewhat of a normal practice session. Yes, some take lessons and 'try' and fit the part, however they really don't know how to grasp the funamentals of owning a piano, or putting in the time to actually get better at it. They just know what they are used to. Lessons, practice, notepad from the teacher outlining the 'songs to work on during the week untill the next lesson" are all they know of. So you practice the songs that are outlined, and when you are done, that's it! Well what else? How do you fill in the gaps? And this goes for all instruments, not just the paino.

That is EXACTLY what I am trying to have you overcome. The pitfalls of the mind. The everyday routine of doing the same thing over and over and not going anywhere. Say you have a lesson, ok? And all you have is maybe 1 song to work on... well- what about working on technique or scales, or both- add in some excercises to build strengh, dexterity, speed, or precision? These are some aspects of the piano that teachers overlook. And that's something that if you add it in, you will very quickly get better at, and once you do, you'll be able to take on more and more. By the way, this one section is crucial to your success at growing as a pianist, so think about how you can switch your thought patters to reflect to how good you want to be.
