Barb C
We put in so much time practicing such great music, and if you’re like me, I can only play it again in the future......if I go hunt down the music. Too bad I can’t remember any of it, or just bits and pieces. 🤪😞 So this challenge is for the next four Mondays in November: 1. Pick some music you’d like to start memorizing. 2. On Mondays, post a video of you playing...no books, sheet music, chord chart, iPad... 3. You can play a small section of a song, a whole page or two, even the RH melody of a lead sheet, whatever you’d like to commit to memory. 4. If you want, you could also include a quick tip or idea of what helped you memorize what you played. Did you think through the chord progressions? Do you picture the music a certain way? Go by ear? Muscle memory? Deep breath and “hope for the best” method? (That’s a popular one. 😉) Also, REMEMBER 😂 to include a hashtag on your post. #memberchallenge or #makingmemories
Miriam K
I love this idea, Barb! I'll join you on this one since I'm working every day on "Danny Boy" and getting toward the end of it. I had an idea about memorizing today since we have been talking about it. That is, rather than videotaping something I am already pretty good at, to maybe videotape myself while learning a new section to give a sense of how I do it. Then we can see everyone's method of memorizing and get some ideas for ourselves. What do you think of that>?
Barb C
You’re saying to talk about how you memorize, included in the video of the new section you’re working on? Sorry if I’m not understanding. 😉 i think that sounds good though, if so. If people want to speak in the video or write on the post about how they do what they do, Im sure that would be helpful. I know for me, I’m currently NOT good at playing any of my music from memory, so to get a page or two by Monday will be a challenge. And I’ll be curious what happens to my memory when I know my phone is recording. (Silly. It’s still just me there.) This will be good for me on several levels. Miriam K
I'm not sure how it would work. I'm thinking of videotaping me in the midst of my process. I think we're all learning here how to not be shy of playing our mistakes for all to see. I'm taking it a little further to show and maybe talk at the same time about how I'm getting through the process of memorization? Maybe tomorrow when I practice and move on to a new area of "Danny Boy", I'll tape myself to see how it would work. Oh, and I totally agree about forgetting what I've memorized when knowing I am being recorded. Thank you for your transparency, Barb! Barb C
Yeah, that sounds good. Lmk how it goes. I’m super excited to have some extra motivation to memorize. All these years and I’ve never really had a plan or system for memorization. And I feel like when I was really young it just came. Ah, to be young again.... and do you know if I post this on the Facebook page or do people look here very often?
Miriam K
I would post on the Facebook page. I don't ever look here.
