Check out this interview video to learn more about Ellen!

Ellen frequently contributes to the PWJ Facebook community, encouraging other piano players with the videos they post.  She participates in a lot of the challenges in the group, both the PWJ challenges and other ones which members create.  Thank you Ellen for posting all of your piano videos and inspiring other members along their piano music journey!

Here is her PWJ Member spotlight, please join with me in congratulating her!

1. Where are you from?

•    Hmmm, I was born in McKeesport, PA, grew up in Lorain, Ohio, currently living in New London, Wisconsin. I’ve lived in so many places that once, while applying for a job, the interviewer jokingly asked if I was with the Witness Protection Program. BUT I’ve lived in New London, Wisconsin, for the last 18 years.

2. When did you start playing piano?

•    I started taking piano lessons at age 6.

3. What got you interested in learning music?

•    My older sister and cousin were taking piano lessons and I started playing around on the piano for fun.   I was later *forced* to commit to classical piano lessons for 5 years and then given the option to continue or not after that.  Also, there was always music in the house coming from the stereo thanks to my parents, heavy on the Frank Sinatra ;-).

4. What is your favorite style of piano music?

•    I love so many styles, but to name a few, I love Motown, musicals, blues, and contemporary worship.

5. Do you have any favorite pieces to play?

•    Currently the Rock & Roll piece from Jonny’s course, Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody

6. What has most helped you most in improving as a pianist?

•    Posting AND watching other people’s videos has helped immensely—realizing that people can enjoy a piece that isn’t 100% perfect, seeing myself from someone else’s eyes. And, of course, putting the time in at the bench to be able to do the best I can.

7. Do you have any tips for other PWJ members?

•    Always have something that you’re working on with definite goals, such as complete by X. Try to practice at least 5 days/week, even if it’s just for 15 minutes some days.

8. What is your favorite part of the PWJ Membership?

•    Besides the great teaching method of Jonny May, it would be the community and the support that we give each other. Seeing people at ALL levels striving to improve.

9. What are your future music goals?

•    Master the set list that I have for myself and continue to add new songs to it. Also to learn a few more pieces that I can play without sheet music so I can sit down at the piano and wow some people ;-).

10. Do you have any words you try to live by or a favorite quote?

•    One of my favorite quotes is something my husband once said many years ago. It was related to his business, but I think it applies to everything: Everyone makes mistakes; it’s what you do after that’s important.
